Carved High won a Silver ADDY Award for Book Design during the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of the Black Hills ADDY Awards on February 18. The ADDYs recognizes creative excellence in the art of advertising. Conducted annually by the AFF, the AAF-Black Hills ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tier, national competition.
The book also won a bronze award in the Gift/Holiday/Specialty Book Category during the 2010 PubWest Design Awards presented by Publisher's Association of the West.
Gutzon Borglum: His Life & Work and Mount Rushmore's Hall of Records both won a Gold Award in the 2009 Black Hills Advertising Awards for Publication Design, Cover in the Collateral Material category. The event was held May 7, 2009 and was sponsored by the Black Hills Advertising Federation. a Gold Award is recognition of the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be superior to all other entries in the competition.
Face to Face with Mount Rushmore Wins PIAZ Award Face to Face with Mount Rushmore won the Printing Industries of Arizona’s (PIAZ) 2008 Print Excellence Gold Award in Special Finishing during PIAZ’s Print Excellence Competition held in January. The children’s book, targeted toward children ages 9 to 12, was printed by Arizona Lithographers. It was written by Mitchell, South Dakota resident Jean L.S. Patrick, illustrated by Patrick Faricy and designed by Amanda Summers Design. The PIAZ Awards recognize Arizona printing companies that have combined craft with technology to produce outstanding printed material.
Mount Rushmore's Hall of Records Wins APPL Award Mount Rushmore’s Hall of Records won the Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL) 2009 APPL Media & Partnership Award in the General Interest Publication category. The awards ceremony was held in March. Written by South Dakota native Paul Higbee, this book was first published in 1998 and was redesigned in 2008. It was printed by Simpson’s Printing of Rapid City. The APPL Media & Partnership Awards program recognizes the outstanding contributions made by not-for-profit partners through essential materials that interpret our nation’s parks, refuges, monuments, forests, lakes, open spaces and historic places.
Prairie Pasque Award Nominee Who Carved the Mountain? The Story of Mount Rushmore is a South Dakota Prairie Pasque Flower Nominee. The Prairie Pasque Children's Book Award, sponsored by the South Dakota Library Association, is determined by fourth, fifth and sixth grade students throughout the state. Audio Tour wins National Park Service Award National Park Service Deputy Director Dan Wenk presented the Director’s Award for Excellence in Interpretive Media to the Mount Rushmore History Association on February 25, 2008, for their project Mount Rushmore Audio Tour: Living Memorial during the Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL) Awards Banquet held in Denver, CO.
The National Park Service recognizes the very best in National Park Service interpretive media by presenting the Director’s Award. Signed by National Park Service Director Mary Bomar, this award is considered the “best in show” of all entries submitted for the APPL Awards over a two-year period.
This is the third national award for the Mount Rushmore History Association this year. The audio tour was the 2007 winner in the audio/visual division of the APPL Awards and the 2007 winner in the audio tour division of the National Association for Interpretation Media Awards.
History Association Featured in Lands' End The History Association staff were pictured on the cover of the Lands' End Business Outfitters Magazine. Inside, we were featured in a two-page spread which explained our mission at the park. We were thrilled to be a part of this national publication.

Audio Tour Wins NAI National Award The National Association for Interpretation recently named Mount Rushmore National Memorial's audio tour as the winner in the Audio Tour Division during the 2007 Interpretive Media Awards held in Wichita, Kansas, November 8. The Media Awards spotlight those who promote excellence in the delivery of natural, cultural and historical non-personal interpretive services. "Non-person" services include mediums such as exhibits, audio, video or books that supplement traditional ranger talks. NAI members include national park service and state park interepreters, among others.
Audio Tour Wins APPL National Award The Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL) recently named Mount Rushmore National Memorial’s audio tour as the winner in the audio/visual division during the 2007 Media and Partnership Awards held in Sacramento, CA, on March 19, 2007. For 30 years, APPL has promoted the development of quality not-for-profit organizations that work in harmony with public lands agencies to achieve mutual goals and inspire the public.
Mount Rushmore Audio Tour: Living Memorial incorporates a lightweight, handheld wand which features narration, music, interviews, sound effects and historic recordings of Gutzon Borglum, Lincoln Borglum, Mary Ellis Borglum Vhay, American Indians and several workers. Visitors can listen to this self-guided tour while sitting in a favorite spot at the memorial or walking around the park on a suggested route. The tour and accompanying brochure and map are translated into Spanish, German and Lakota. More languages may be added in the future.
The project was entirely funded by the Mount Rushmore History Association working with Q Media Productions of Florida. A committee consisting of the National Park Service, the Mount Rushmore History Association staff/committee members and the Mount Rushmore Memorial Society board members developed the direction, content and flow of the tour. The wands themselves were developed by TourMate, internationally known for developing quality audio tour technology for parks and museums.
The tour is available for $5, inclusive of sales tax in the Audio Tour Building during the summer months and in the Mount Rushmore History Association Bookstore located in the Information Center in the winter. Come listen to the voices of the mountain... the people whose vision inspires thousands every year.
